What to drive ... hmmm ... what to drive ...

So Curt and I have decided that we will be consolidating our vehicles into one. We are going to trade the Corolla and the truck in for a new vehicle. We really only need one vehicle. Curt takes the BART to work. I drive to work--it is only 10-15 minutes away. It is crazy to be paying two car payments, insurance, registration, gas, maintenance, etc. for two cars. If we were rich, then great. But we aren't. We are just in the hmmm, what do we think we like stage. But we are thinking of: Rav4, Jetta, Outback, Forester, some sort of Saturn, etc. I find myself looking at cars on the road. I have recently riden in a few co-workers cars and I inspect the cars. I figure sometime this summer we will have a new vehicle.

I don't like my Jetta :-P so I'd skip that one if I were you. I'm always drawn to those forrester/outbacks, personally. :-)

Are you serious about not liking your Jetta? Our friend Erica had one and if I remember correctly it kinda crapped out on her. Windows not rolling up right and stuff and it wasn't that old. And she got it brand new.

It is funny that you mentioned my Jetta because before I even saw your or Stephanie's comments I was planning to write a comment. DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT get a Jetta. I had nothing but problems from Day 1 and mine was brand new. Yes, the motor for the electric window died (with the window down) and they wanted a small fortune to replace it. Instead, I kept the window rolled up and wouldn't let anyone try to roll it down. I was told that it was a pretty common problem, and their temporary solution was to stick a piece of foam inside the door jam so that the window wouldn't roll down. I call that professional!

And, that wasn't even the major problem. That had to do with the transmission. It was an automatic but the transmission wouldn't shift into the correct gear. I would be driving up Scottsdale Road (55 miles speed limit up north) and it wouldn't shift from 3rd to 4th or from 4th to 5th. The car would rev and rev but the transmission would not shift. I brought it in for service countless times and again and again I was told that nothing was wrong with the car and that was just how it drove. I did a lot of internet research and learned that the current Jettas are made in Mexico and many of them have this problem. My sister had a Jetta for 10+ years and never had a problem but that was when they were made in Germany. I don't think Mexico is known for car production! As you know, I got rid of the car. When car shopping I test drove the Passat for the hell of it. It was nice but not $28,000 nice. I got my BMW for $30,000 and it drives like a dream (and for only an extra $2,000!). I am due for my 67,500 mile service and never had a problem (I hope I'm not jixing myself!). I would recommend a Subaru - I think that both Kate and Leah are really happy with theirs. My sister and her husband both have Saturns and they love them. They didn't buy them new and, even with some miles, they still haven't had problems.

Casey just chimed in and said that you should consider a Camry. His mom has one and is really happy with it.

Sorry for the novel but I just wanted to let you know my thoughts and discourage you from considering the Jetta.
